What is Earthing System Audit?

An earthing system audit reviews the visible condition, identification, accessibility, records and maintenance controls associated with protective and functional earthing. Depending on the agreed scope, it may also include or coordinate earth-resistance, continuity or related measurements using suitable instruments and competent personnel. The purpose is to identify gaps that could affect fault-current paths, protective-device operation and equipment safety.

An earthing audit is not automatically a complete electrical-system design verification. Excavation, destructive checks, shutdowns, soil-resistivity study, lightning-protection design and detailed fault calculations require separate agreement.

Auditors review the single-line diagram, earthing layout, previous readings and maintenance history, then inspect accessible pits, conductors, terminations, bonds and identification. Measurements, when included, are planned around equipment limitations, weather, isolation needs and safe access. Results are recorded with test method, location and limitations.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about earthing system audit

Does the audit include earth-resistance testing?

It can. The proposal must specifically state the pits or systems to be measured, method, instrument, access and isolation conditions. A visual-only scope does not include measurements.

What documents are useful before the visit?

Current earthing layouts, SLDs, pit numbers, previous readings, instrument certificates, maintenance records, equipment additions and known problem history are valuable.

Can every earth pit be tested while the plant is operating?

Not always. The method, interconnected system, access, safety conditions and operational restrictions may limit testing. Any untested locations and assumptions are recorded.

Is this the same as an electrical safety audit?

No. An earthing audit focuses on the earthing and bonding arrangements. A broader electrical safety audit also reviews panels, protection, cables, temporary wiring, work practices and documentation.

When should the system be reassessed?

Review is appropriate after major electrical additions, excavation or civil work near conductors, abnormal readings, lightning events, relevant faults, damage and at the organisation’s defined periodic interval.
