What We Review

Thermal scanning is planned around equipment availability, safe access and representative operating load.

01

LT Panels

Thermal inspection of accessible low-voltage panels and feeders.

02

Distribution Boards

Scanning of accessible breakers, terminals and connections.

03

MCCs & Controls

Inspection of motor-control and control-panel thermal patterns.

04

Busbar Connections

Identification of abnormal heating at joints and connections.

05

Load Patterns

Review of possible imbalance, overload or deteriorating components.

06

Visible Condition

Panel access, housekeeping, labelling and apparent physical condition.

07

Image Correlation

Thermal and corresponding visible images for clear identification.

08

Priority Rating

Maintenance priority based on observed thermal pattern and context.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Must equipment be energised?

Yes. Useful thermography generally requires equipment to operate under a representative load.

Does this replace an electrical audit?

No. Thermography is a diagnostic inspection and complements a wider electrical safety audit.

Will panels be opened?

Only where authorised and where the client provides safe access arrangements under site procedures.

Can multiple sites be covered?

Yes. Multi-site surveys can use a standard format and consolidated summary.

Electrical Thermography Planning, Interpretation and Limitations

Thermal imaging is most useful when equipment is energised, carrying representative load and safely accessible. The client retains operational control and provides authorised personnel, permits and safe panel-opening arrangements.

Information to Prepare

  • Current single-line diagram and equipment identification schedule
  • List of panels, MCCs, distribution boards and critical feeders
  • Normal operating load, shift pattern and known intermittent loads
  • Recent maintenance, breakdown and previous thermography information
  • Safe-access, arc-flash, PPE and authorised-person requirements

How Thermal Findings Are Interpreted

Observed patternPossible considerationRecommended response
Localised connection heatingLoose, deteriorated or high-resistance jointPlan safe inspection and corrective maintenance
One phase warmer than othersLoad imbalance or connection conditionReview loading and verify electrical condition
Components uniformly warmHigh load or ventilation limitationCompare load, rating and environment
No meaningful differenceEquipment may be lightly loadedConsider rescanning under representative load

Thermography identifies thermal patterns; it does not by itself establish the definitive cause or replace isolation, testing and competent electrical investigation. Emissivity, reflections, load and ambient conditions influence interpretation.
